Tips For Encouraging Your Child To Read
Encouraging your child to cultivate a love of reading is simple. Try the following tips and you'll quickly notice a difference.
1. Create a "reading spot". This can be a pile of pillows, a bean bag, even a little tent made from cushions and bedsheet. Include a basket of reading material, and make sure the area has plenty of light. This space is just for reading and is your youngster's space.
2. Read to your child every day. Take every opportunity to read, such as signs, share a paragraph or two from your reading material, sit them in you lap if they are small children and let them follow your finger as you read each word. Tap on the page to get their attention if they are very young.
3. Fill your home with books, magazines and reference material. Let your children see you read them often. Turn off the television and have quiet time to enjoy a good book.
4. Check your local library or book stores for junior book clubs. There are also mother/child book clubs in some cities. Ask for recommended reading lists with appropriate titles for their age. Every child should have a library card and should know their way around a library.
5. Build their interest by finding books about their interests. Does you child live dinosaurs? Butterflies? Superheros? There are books for every subject under the sun!
